Medical repatriation between Russia and India: who we move

Before you fly
Four things can delay a transfer between Russia and India. Start them as soon as the transfer is being considered.
Visa for India
Indian passport holders and OCI card holders do not need a visa. Citizens of Russia, Belarus, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia can apply online for an Indian e-Medical Visa, with up to two e-Medical Attendant visas for companions.
Airline medical clearance
For a stretcher or an escorted seat, the airline’s medical department must approve the patient first, using its medical information form. This usually takes a few days.
Airspace and permits
Airspace closures limit which operators can fly to and from Russia, and which route an Indian aircraft can take. We confirm the operator and the permits before quoting.
Receiving hospital
We send the case file to the hospital in India and confirm the bed and the specialist before departure.

Three ways to travel
Air ambulance services between Russia and India run in three ways. The patient’s condition decides which of them are possible. The time available and the price decide between them.
Private ICU air ambulance jet
For critical or unstable patients. A jet with a full ICU team flies to the patient’s schedule. Moscow to Delhi is within the range of a mid-size or larger jet, depending on the route it is cleared to fly.
Commercial airline stretcher
For stable patients who must lie flat, where the airline accepts a stretcher. A doctor or nurse travels alongside, and the airline must give medical clearance first.
Medical escort in an airline seat
For stable patients who can sit upright. A doctor or nurse travels in the next seat with oxygen and medicines.

Distances and aircraft for a private air ambulance
For air ambulance services from Russia and the Caucasus, the distances are moderate: Baku, Tbilisi and Yerevan are within reach of a mid-size jet, and Moscow of a super mid-size or long-range jet. Airspace closures can lengthen the route.
| Route | Distance |
|---|---|
| Moscow to Delhi | 4,350 km |
| St Petersburg to Delhi | 4,950 km |
| Novosibirsk to Delhi | 3,000 km |
| Kazan to Delhi | 3,750 km |
| Minsk to Delhi | 4,850 km |
| Baku to Delhi | 2,800 km |
| Tbilisi to Delhi | 3,250 km |
| Yerevan to Delhi | 3,250 km |
| Moscow to Goa | 5,450 km |
Photos show examples of each type. The aircraft for a transfer depends on the route and the operator available. Maximum range is the manufacturer’s figure; with a patient, a medical team and fuel reserves on board the practical range is shorter. Full figures: air ambulance aircraft.
How a transfer from Russia works
Bedside assessment and fit-to-fly
The treating doctor carries out a bedside assessment and issues fit-to-fly clearance for the patient.
Route, operator and airports
Our operations team selects the route, an operator that can fly it, and the airports, based on the patient’s medical needs, visas and insurance approvals.
Permits and clearances
Overflight approvals and landing clearances are secured for each country on the route, or the airline’s medical clearance for a commercial transfer.
Ground handover at both ends
Ground ambulances are arranged at departure and arrival, with a full handover to the receiving hospital.
The air ambulance booking guide lists the documents needed at each stage.

Air ambulance services Russia: common questions
How much do air ambulance services from Russia to India cost?
Russia and the Caucasus are not yet on our published rate list, so every transfer is quoted in writing after the medical report is reviewed. For scale, a private ICU jet costs about ₹27 lakh to ₹45 lakh between India and the UAE, about 2,200 km, and about ₹52.5 lakh to ₹97.5 lakh or more between India and continental Europe. Moscow is about 4,350 km from Delhi. A stretcher or a medical escort on a commercial flight costs much less than a private jet.
Can a patient fly from Moscow to Delhi on a commercial flight?
Yes, if the patient is stable. Aeroflot flies nonstop from Moscow to Delhi daily in about 6 hours. A patient who can sit upright travels with a doctor or nurse in the next seat, and a patient who must lie flat can travel on a stretcher where the airline accepts one. The airline’s medical department must clear the patient first.
How long does a medical flight from Russia to India take?
The nonstop scheduled flight from Moscow to Delhi takes about 6 hours. A private air ambulance takes a similar time on a direct route, and longer if it has to route around closed airspace or stop for fuel. Allow extra time for airline medical clearance, visas and flight permits before departure.
Do airspace bans affect an air ambulance from Russia?
Yes. Airlines and aircraft from the EU, the UK, the US, Canada and more than 30 other countries cannot use Russian airspace, so they cannot fly the transfer. Indian aircraft are not affected by those bans, but Pakistan’s airspace is closed to Indian-registered aircraft, which lengthens their route. We check which operators can fly each case.
Which countries does this page cover?
Russia, Belarus, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia. Transfers from Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan are covered on our Central Asia page.
Do Russian citizens need a visa for treatment in India?
Yes. Russian citizens, like citizens of Belarus, Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia, can apply online for an Indian e-Medical Visa, with up to two e-Medical Attendant visas for companions. Indian passport holders and OCI card holders do not need a visa.
Can you bring a patient from India back to Russia?
Yes. The same three options apply in the other direction: a private ICU jet, an airline stretcher where accepted, or a medical escort in an airline seat. The receiving hospital or doctor in Russia must agree to take the patient before departure.
Does Safe Fly Aviation operate the aircraft?
No. Flights are flown by licensed air ambulance operators and scheduled airlines that are allowed to fly the route. Safe Fly Aviation arranges the transfer and gives families and case managers one point of contact.
