From Africa to India: Routes by Country

Many patients from Africa travel to India for specialist treatment such as cardiac surgery, cancer care and transplants. How the patient travels depends on the condition and on the flights from each country.

Airline schedules change. We check the flights operating on the day before recommending a commercial transfer.

We do not publish fixed rates for Africa, because the routing, fuel stops and permits differ from case to case. For scale, a private ICU jet costs about ₹27 lakh to ₹45 lakh between India and the UAE, and about ₹52.5 lakh to ₹97.5 lakh or more between India and Europe. Before You Fly to India

• Yellow fever certificate: India asks travellers arriving from countries with yellow fever risk, including Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and Ethiopia, for a valid vaccination certificate. It becomes valid 10 days after vaccination. A traveller without one can be quarantined for up to 6 days on arrival, so tell us early if the patient or a companion has no certificate.
• Medical visa: patients need an Indian Medical Visa, with Medical Attendant visas for companions. At the time of writing, citizens of Kenya, Ghana and South Africa can apply online for an e-Medical Visa. Where the e-Visa is not available for a nationality, the application goes through the Indian High Commission or Embassy.
• Hospital acceptance and fit-to-fly: the receiving hospital in India issues an acceptance letter, and the treating doctor issues fit-to-fly clearance. We send the case file to the hospital and confirm the bed before departure.

How a transfer works

1. Bedside assessment and fit-to-fly clearance. The treating doctor carries out a bedside assessment and issues fit-to-fly clearance for the patient.
2. Route, fuel and airport selection. Our operations team selects the route, fuel stops and airports based on the patient's medical needs and the aircraft's range.
3. Permits and airspace clearances. Permits, overflight approvals and landing clearances are secured for each country on the route.
4. Ground handover at both ends. Ground ambulances are arranged at departure and arrival, with a full handover to the receiving hospital.
