Why organised groups need a medical plan
A medical emergency on the road will not wait for help to arrive from a town. These are the risks we plan for.
Road accidents
Mountain roads and long highway days carry real risk. A medical team already in the convoy starts treatment at once, where an ambulance called from a town could be a long way off.
Altitude sickness
Ladakh, Spiti and the high Himalayan passes can cause high-altitude pulmonary oedema (HAPE) and cerebral oedema (HACE). Both are emergencies. Descent and oxygen are the treatment, so the way down is planned first.
Cardiac emergencies
Older participants on pilgrimages and tours are at higher risk of a cardiac event. A defibrillator and a team trained in advanced cardiac life support travel with the group.
Heat stroke and dehydration
Desert routes such as Rajasthan, and summer events anywhere, bring a risk of severe dehydration and heat stroke. The team watches for early signs and treats them.
Remote terrain
Many adventure routes are hours from the nearest hospital, and from some a helicopter is the only quick way out. We plan the evacuation points along the route in advance.
Duty of care
Organisers owe their participants a duty of care. A documented medical plan shows that the risks were assessed and provided for.

Hospitals along the route
Before the trip we identify the hospitals on the route that can take an emergency admission, including major chains such as Apollo, Fortis, Max and Manipal where they are nearby, and regional tertiary-care centres elsewhere.
If a participant is transferred, we coordinate the admission with the hospital and keep the organiser informed.

What is expedition medical support?
An ambulance and a medical team travel with your group for the whole journey. They treat problems on the spot, and if someone needs a hospital they move the patient by road or arrange a helicopter or air ambulance.
Do you accompany motorcycle tours across India?
Yes. We arrange medical cover for motorcycle expeditions to Ladakh, Spiti, the North-East, Rajasthan and other remote routes. The ambulance follows the group, and the team is briefed on the route, the altitude and the nearest hospitals before the start.
Can you support Char Dham Yatra groups?
Yes. We arrange a medical escort for pilgrimage groups on the Char Dham route, and for the Amarnath Yatra and the Kumbh Mela. Helicopter evacuation can be arranged where helicopters are able to operate.
Is helicopter evacuation available in Ladakh?
It can be arranged from many places in Ladakh, but it is never guaranteed. A helicopter flight there depends on the weather, the altitude, a usable landing site and permission to fly. The evacuation plan for each route therefore also includes a road option.
What equipment is carried in the ambulance?
An ICU ambulance carries a ventilator, a cardiac monitor and defibrillator, infusion and syringe pumps, oxygen, a trauma kit and spine board, and emergency medicines. Equipment is matched to the route and the group, and listed in the cover plan.
Can a doctor accompany our convoy?
Yes. A doctor can travel with any group. For groups of more than 30 people, and on remote or high-altitude routes, we recommend an emergency physician in addition to paramedics.
Do you support cycling events?
Yes. We arrange medical cover for cycling expeditions, brevet rides and multi-day cycling tours.
Do you offer annual contracts for tour operators?
Yes. An annual programme covers all of an organiser’s departures in a year, with priority response, agreed pricing and one planning contact.
Who pays for a helicopter evacuation?
That is agreed before the trip. It depends on the event agreement and on each participant’s insurance. As a guide, a helicopter evacuation costs about ₹2.25 lakh to ₹10.5 lakh or more, depending on distance and terrain, so it is worth checking that participants’ insurance covers it.
Can you support foreign tourists in India?
Yes. We arrange medical cover for international groups travelling in India, and can deal with their travel insurers and assistance companies when a patient is treated or evacuated.
